Twenty-four hour blood pressure monitoring
You may be advised by your doctors to have your blood pressure monitored for twenty-four hours. There are a number of reasons why a doctor may request this test including:
- An unusual variability of blood pressure measurements obtained during multiple clinical sessions
- The patient may complain of symptoms suggestive of hypotension (low blood pressure)
- Patients may have a falsely high reading during a GP consultation due to increased anxiety (also known as white coat hypertension)
- To help confirm the diagnosis of hypertension (high blood pressure)
- To help diagnose nocturnal hypertension
- May be useful in patients who have drug resistant hypertension
- To help evaluate whether new treatment for hypertension is working effectively
- To diagnose hypertension in pregnancy
You must book another appointment at the reception with a nurse.
The nurse will attach a cuff and monitor and give advice on hygiene and frequency of cuff inflation.
It is important not to remove the device unless very uncomfortable.
You will be asked to come in the next day. The monitor and cuff will be removed and all the information is uploaded onto the computer.
The results will go to the doctor and a later appointment will be arranged to discuss the findings of the test.
